The first kind of future is more of the present. Stagnation gives rise to extremism, which fractures societies, gives rise to demagogues, fuels isolationism, and reopens old wounds of race, class, creed, and tribe. This is more or less the future that many of us subscribe to. In this kind of future, the rebirth of old hierarchies — I am above you, you are below me, I am of pure blood, you are not, and so on — emerges as people seek shelter from the storm, seeking superiority by grouping together and pulling others down, which inevitably suffocates and destroys human possibility, instead of liberating it.
